What makes the French Press so special is its versatility. At MochaSurf, we love the device because it can be used to create a wide range of unique coffee recipes—way beyond what you can do with more mainstream brewing methods. Here are a few ideas:
Cold Brew Concentrate: For cold brew fans, the French Press is a terrific time saver. Instead of using hot water, simply combine coarsely ground coffee with cold water in the French Press, stir to make sure all the grounds are saturated, and let it steep in the fridge overnight. After steeping, press the plunger and pour the concentrated cold brew over ice (or coffee cubes—more on those in a minute or two.). Dilute your cold brew with water or milk to your desired strength.
French Press Latte: Make a creamy latte using a French Press. First, brew a strong batch of coffee in the French Press. While the coffee is brewing, heat milk (or a milk alternative) on the stove or in the microwave until it’s hot—but not boiling. Pour the brewed coffee into a mug, then froth the hot milk using a milk frother or by vigorously shaking it in a sealed container. Pour the frothed milk over the coffee, spooning foam on top as desired.
Flavored Infusions: Experiment with adding flavor to your coffee by infusing the water with spices, herbs, or other ingredients. Add cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, cardamom pods, citrus peels (or anything else that floats your boat) to the water before brewing. Let the ingredients steep along with the coffee grounds to impart their flavors into the brew. Strain out the solids before pressing the coffee.
Iced Coffee Cubes: This a such a cool little trick—instead of using regular ice cubes that can dilute your iced coffee, try making coffee ice cubes using your French Press! Brew a strong batch of coffee, let it cool to room temperature, then pour it into ice cube trays and freeze. When you're ready to enjoy iced coffee, use these coffee ice cubes instead of regular ice cubes to chill your drink without watering it down—and because the French Press makes such a robust style of coffee, the coffee cubes will actually impart an additional bit of character to your cold brew.
Coffee Cocktails: Use your French Press to create coffee-based cocktails. For example, you can make a Coffee Martini by brewing strong coffee in the French Press, letting it cool, then shaking it with vodka, coffee liqueur, and ice. Strain the mixture into a glass and garnish with coffee beans or a twist of orange peel. How dashing is that?
